Un voyage époustouflant dans les traditions balinaises du début du siècle, teinté de permanence. Fascinée par des photographies de Bali, Vicky Baum y séjourna en 1935. Elle y fit la connaissance du docteur Fabius, qui lui légua à sa mort un coffret contenant des notes, son journal et un imposant manuscrit retraçant un épisode sanglant de la colonisation de Bali par les Hollandais : le Poupoutan (littéralement " la fin").
Grâce à tous ces documents, Vicki Baum écrivit en 1937 Sang et volupté à Bali, une saga historique située au coeur du quotidien des Balinais et de l'occupation néerlandaise du début du XXe siècle. Cherchant à étendre leur contrôle, les Hollandais décidèrent à l'époque de lancer une opération militaire, qui mena les habitants de l'île à un suicide collectif.
